Microsoft have announced the new name for WSS, now called SharePoint Server 2010 Foundation (Beta available in November)
Includes the following:
- Will remain Free (Same as WSS)
- Ribbon Menu (as you see in Office 2007)
- Web Edit – quick customisations to pages adding SharePoint Lists, content, web parts
- Cross Browser Support – FireFox, Safari, IE 6,7,8 and Mobile access
- SharePoint Designer 2010 still a free download
- Best Practice Analyser built in
- Requires x64 Platform,Windows 2008, SQL Server 2005 express and above
