More SharePoint 2010 features

Having a play with SharePoint 2010 and picking through the mind field of video below are some highlights of the features:

  • Sites – Allows users to share content by building and creating web pages using a fimiliar Office 2007 ribbon interface, the sites are now cross browser compatible (FireFox, Safari, IE6,7,8)
  • Document Feedback – Documents can now be rated using stars on how useful your users found the information.
  • Chart and Web Part & Status Indicators – Graphically shown
  • Excel Services – Manage and share excel workbooks
  • PerformancePoint Services – Interactive Dashboards to view a variety of KPIs
  • Visio Services – Create and share your visio diagrams
  • Sandbox solutions – allowing Developers to upload custom application code (wsp) without impacting the overrall farm performance by ring fencing the process and limited access to the API. Site Admin’s can then monitor the code and it it is consuming too many resources it can be terminated, also shows a historical record of it’s performance.
  • Enterprise Search – FAST Search is now integratedinto sharepoint to improve the aaggregation of content, and developer flexibilityin extending search. Below are some key benefits
     1. Preview image of the Document in search results
     2. Preview of documents
     3. Search Refiner – Refine by Document type, Author, Site, Modified Date with hit results
     4. Sorting Results – date newest, date oldest, relevance
     5. Click ranking (common documents shown first)
     6. Improved People search – phonetic search, refiners (by location, interests, school, expertise)
  • Backup and Restore Feature now allows for granular item restore

Over the next couple of days I’m hoping to build a document containing screenshots and more detail around central admin

SharePoint 2010 where has the SSP gone.

SharePoint 2010 where has the SSP gone.

2010 has now removed the SSP feature as it was found difficult to use and DB intensive (too many DB’s)

It has now been replaced with Service Applications, Service Application can be related to 1 or more web application and each Service Application has it’s own DB.

This makes it easier to share resources and isolate others.
